Food for Kids is a collaborative effort between Second Harvest and area schools, with the goal of fighting hunger among young children in our 18 County East Tennessee community.

When teachers identify children in their classroom that are showing signs of hunger, the teacher places a request with Second Harvest for the child to begin to receive food assistance. This assistance provides kid-friendly food for the child on the weekend. The food and backpacks are then delivered to the Food Pantry where volunteers unload, sort, fill, and distribute bags to Lonsdale Elementary School, and the teacher is able to hand them out to the children in their class.

During the summer, families from Grace Baptist Church deliver the food to the children at their home each week. Last summer, we served 20 families and delivered 76 bags each week. During the school year, we provide food for 190 children each week. This year, we anticipate the need to be even greater.

If you would like to participate in this ministry to the children in the Lonsdale community, please send your name, e-mail address, a contact phone number, and any requests for a specific family to Joni Keith.

We will begin delivering to the homes the first week of June, and the program generally lasts 10 weeks. We will have a brief informational meeting on May 16 and May 23 (you need to attend only one of these) at the Charis In Action Food Pantry beginning at 6:15 pm.

Come join us for lunch and a class taught by Pastor Ron Stewart and Rob Hammond. This class discusses helpful information about our structure, our standards and our expectations. You will also learn what we believe, what we practice and what we expect. Childcare is provided for children.
